While most of us can experience nosebleeds at some point, for others it can be a more frequent problem. Blood can come out of one or both nostrils and can be light or heavy, sometimes lasting up to 10 minutes! Nosebleeds in public places can be very uncomfortable and scary. No matter what the reason may be, you should know what to do and what to avoid in these situations.
Here are the dos and don'ts when your nose starts to bleed.
What to do:
The first thing to do when your nose starts to bleed is to stay calm. Don't panic.
To stop a nosebleed, sit down, lean forward, and pinch the top of your nose above the nostrils. Continue this for at least 10 minutes without being tempted to check to see if the bleeding has stopped. If you are alone, you can also track the time using your phone. This will drain the blood that has accumulated inside your nose.
Cover the ice pack with a towel and place it on the bridge of your nose.
No:
Usually, when someone is suffering from a nosebleed, the first advice is to lean back or lie on your back. This must be avoided. If you lean back, blood will rush to your throat, causing you to choke on blood. Swallowing blood can upset your tummy and make you vomit.
It can take at least a week for the nose to heal after a nosebleed.
Do not pick or scratch the inside of your nose as this can make your condition worse.
Do not snort too hard. This can strain the veins in your nasal passage and cause your nose to bleed again.
Do not drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes during a nosebleed.
But, occasional nosebleeds can usually be treated at home with simple preventative measures. Keeping the nose moist is very important to prevent the nasal passages from drying out. That's why it's also important to stay hydrated. You can also use nasal saline to avoid drying out your sinuses.
